IWF 2026 Shanghai International Fitness Exhibition Review

March 13–15, 2026 – The 13th IWF Shanghai International Fitness Exhibition & CIST International Sporting Goods Show, organized by Shanghai Donnor Exhibition Services Co., Ltd., was held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

As a bellwether of the sports and fitness industry, the 13th IWF & CIST featured a total trade exhibition area of 80,000 sqm, hosted 1,000+ well-known domestic and international brands, and attracted 65,000+ onsite visitors.

Following the release of this year's post-show data report, the IWF organizing committee, drawing on industry insights and onsite research, has identified eight core development trends in the sports and fitness sector:

Trend 1: Shift in Small Studio Operations – From "Scale-First" to "Space Efficiency-First"

In the past, a venue's competitiveness relied on the quantity and size of equipment. At this year's IWF, many studio and small venue owners reported that lightweight, multifunctional, space-saving equipment is becoming the mainstream choice.

Space efficiency priority: Output per square meter has become a key metric.

Utilization-oriented: Equipment must be used frequently, not just displayed.

Cost control: Large equipment is hard to justify in small studios due to depreciation, maintenance, and space costs.

Trend 2: Strength Training Dominates – Rise of "Iron Gyms," Strength as Social Currency

The structure of fitness content is changing significantly: strength training is expected to account for 60–70% of workouts, while cardio training's share declines. The popularity of iron gyms has clearly increased.

Key drivers:

Upgraded health awareness: Strength training is seen as an effective way to combat muscle loss and improve nerve and bone resilience.

Growing social value: Strength performance (weight, form) is becoming a new identity marker and social currency.

This strength boom is not a short-term fad but a deep redefinition of "health" – shifting from "absence of illness" to "having the physical capital to face life's uncertainties."

Trend 3: Digital & Smart Trends Emerge – AI Moves from Concept to Tool

This year's IWF showcased various real-world applications of "AI + fitness":

Data-driven assessment: Expanding from simple body fat measurement to motion capture, strength curve analysis, and maximal strength testing.

Smart device-driven training: Wearables and smart equipment can provide real-time coaching, adjust plans, and warn of risks.

Supporting lifelong sports: Giving ordinary users data feedback close to that of professional athletes, enabling a quantifiable, trackable, and iterable scientific fitness path.

In the future, fitness equipment will evolve from "cold iron" into interactive, evolving smart partners, providing the technical foundation for "lifelong sports."

Trend 4: IWF's Next Stop – From a "Professional Trade Show" to an "Ecosystem Exhibition"

The Secretary-General of the Shanghai Fitness Industry Association noted that this year's IWF delivered a "satisfactory answer sheet," achieving significant breakthroughs in scale and attendance, demonstrating the industry's confidence. Looking ahead, IWF still has room to grow.

From "full" to "new & unique" in exhibits: The industry no longer wants a pile of categories but cutting-edge technology, debut products, and innovative designs. IWF must work harder in this regard, aiming to become a "technology bellwether" for sports and fitness, not a traditional "big marketplace."

Strengthening C-side interaction and communication: Previously dominated by B-side logic. With changes in the fitness consumer decision chain, C-side users are growing in influence. The exhibition needs more C-side experience activities to make ordinary users willing to come, have fun, and actively share.

Expanding into related categories like nutrition, footwear & apparel: The fitness ecosystem isn't limited to equipment. Sports nutrition, functional footwear/apparel, rehabilitation gear, and smart wearables offer higher margins and user stickiness. Upgrading from a "professional fitness show" to a "sports health ecosystem exhibition" broadens category boundaries and unlocks greater commercial value.

IWF's next stop is to evolve from a professional trade show into an ecosystem platform covering "equipment + services + content + consumer goods," truly becoming a value connector between the industry and users.

Trend 5: Innovation in Fitness Industry Courses – Rise of Barre and Tower Courses, International & Local Synergy

To determine whether a course trend is real, it must be validated across multiple dimensions. The concentrated buzz around Barre and tower courses at this year's IWF can be confirmed along three lines:

Localization of international courses: A top Korean club brought senior Barre instructors to teach in China, receiving enthusiastic feedback. The founder of a well-known fitness brand has already expressed interest in introducing the curriculum, validating the cross-border business logic.

Collective bets by domestic leaders: Li Xin Pilates launched Barre and tower courses in multiple IWF scenarios (classroom sessions, stage demonstrations).

Long-term cultivation by local boutique gyms: Shanghai Z&B Fitness has established a diverse course system including Bfit Toning, Bfit Barre Classic, and Bfit Barre, forming a complete Barre ecosystem – a proven model.

Barre and tower courses – combining strength, flexibility, small equipment, and high engagement – are becoming the standard for next-generation boutique studios. They are not a replacement for strength training but an elegant expression of it.

Trend 6: Industry Chain Expansion – Home Fitness Market Emerges as a Major Player

In the past, IWF was seen as a "trade hub for commercial equipment." This year, the product categories have expanded significantly: the home fitness sector saw a large influx of new exhibitors – from sports footwear/apparel and wearable devices, to outdoor equipment, small training tools, home treadmills, and sports rehab equipment – covering diverse scenarios.

Driver: Clear user behavior divergence

Some people are returning to gyms, seeking peak strength and social experience.

Others want efficient, low-threshold, data-driven daily workouts at home.

Platform response: As an inclusive platform, IWF precisely addresses both needs, balancing commercial vs. home, professional vs. convenient, achieving coexistence and mutual benefit.

The rise of the home fitness market is not a replacement for commercial scenarios but a natural extension of segmented user needs. IWF's industry chain boundaries are widening accordingly, moving from a single commercial focus to a parallel commercial-and-home ecosystem.

Trend 7: Upgraded Visitor Profile – Expanding Breadth of Reach

From 2025 to 2026, the breadth of IWF's onsite visitor profile has expanded. In terms of professional depth and vertical focus, it is no longer limited to equipment distributors/traders, gym/club owners, and Pilates/lifestyle venue owners. Four clear upgrades are visible:

Cross-industry: More newcomers from internet, finance, consumer goods, healthcare, etc.

High-quality: More practitioners with strong decision-making power, high spending power, and willingness to pay for expertise.

Returnees: A notable increase in visitors with overseas study or work backgrounds.

Highly educated: The share of visitors with a master's degree or above has risen significantly.

At the same time, IWF's international influence continues to grow. Organizing committee data show: Overall onsite visitor attendance increased by more than 35%, with international visitor attendance up by more than 45%.

IWF is upgrading into a professional trade platform with global appeal. This upgrade in visitor profile means that higher-quality external forces are paying attention to and entering the industry, laying the foundation for cross-industry integration and value enhancement in the fitness sector.

Trend 8: Global Benchmarking – Mature Paths Validated by the UK and US Fitness Markets

Recent releases of the 2026 UK Health & Fitness Market Report and the US sporting goods industry report provide important references for judging the direction of China's fitness industry.

Key UK market data

Penetration rate: 18% (population aged 16+), an all-time high.

Membership: 12.2 million, with total revenue of £6.5 billion.

Club visits: 679 million, up 10% year-on-year.

Fitness spaces are transforming from purely exercise venues into "social and lifestyle centers." Health has become an important part of personal identity.

Key US market data

Sporting goods wholesale sales: $130 billion, entering a new phase.

Commercial fitness equipment growth, full recovery of offline activities.

Health awareness is turning exercise from a periodic activity into a daily lifestyle.

China's fitness industry is going through a similar maturation process. The evolutionary paths of the UK and US markets provide a comparable reference for China. From "exercise venues" to "lifestyle centers," from "periodic activity" to "daily habit," China's fitness industry is seeing accelerating structural opportunities.

August 14–16, 2026 – The second IWF Shenzhen International Fitness Exhibition & CIST International Sporting Goods Show will continue the industry's new chapter on a larger scale, with updated categories and higher specifications at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center (Futian).

Hereby, the IWF organizing committee sincerely invites global sports and fitness brands, supply chain manufacturers, supporting service companies, buyers/distributors, as well as industry leaders and professional visitors, to seize the opportunities of the times and co-build the future of the industry.
